Digital Marketing is an umbrella term that includes anything from ranking #1 on Google Search to creating awesome content to turn your customers into fans. 

This varies from business to business, and project to project. Below, we’ve defined the most common Buzzwords found when discussing Digital Marketing & Design.

A Brand Identity is the persona or personality of a company presented by all of the brand elements a company has such as logo, brand name, copy voice, colour palette, etc.

An Influencer in the context of Digital Marketing refers to a Social Influencer or Social Media Influencer. This is somebody, generally with a large following on social media, that is paid to promote products, events or even services for brands on their personal social media account(s). This can be a regular person, or even a celebrity or professional athlete.

KPI stands for “Key Performance Indicator” and is often used to refer to results in data or analytics. A Key Performance Indicator can be Number of Sales, Revenue, Number of Follows, etc. Whenever you set a new goal for your business, a set of KPI’s will be established along with the goal to track your progress.

Retargeting is arguably the most important benefit of Digital Advertising. Retargeting is a method of targeting a specific audience who have previously engaged with your website or digital ad. You can use Retargeting as a friendly reminder or to promote sales on products customers backed out of buying. 

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and typically refers to the act of getting your website displayed in the top Google Search results for whatever it is you offer consumers. There are two forms of SEO, On-Page and Off-Page and you’ll need to understand both to please Google and be the first result when somebody searches “where’s the best place to buy _______?” or, “who makes the best _______?”

UGC stands for User Generated Content and refers to any content a brand provides that has been created and submitted by a user or customer. UGC is generally genuine content that other customers enjoy because it’s real and relatable. 

No, not Copyrighting. This non-legal term refers to any text found in a brands representation via Social Media Content, Website, Product Descriptions or Advertisements. Copy is typically written with an objective in mind, such as making a sale, informing or entertaining. 

Mobile Optimization is a necessity in today’s online world. Nearly every consumer has a mobile device and nearly every device owner uses it to search, shop or browse online. Whatever you put online must adjust and display properly on all mobile devices, and making it so is called Mobile Optimization.

PPC is short for Pay Per Click advertising. A PPC ad is an online advertisement that only costs you money when a user clicks your ad. PPC is often used to describe Google Search Ads or Social Media Ads such as Facebook, Instagram or LinkedIn Ads.

SEM is like a combination of SEO and PPC. SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing and refers to the form of marketing that gets your website in the top search results, typically through Paid Advertising. 

SMM stands for Social Media Marketing and can refer to Paid Advertising on Social Media platforms or a company’s marketing effort via Social Media. PPC, Content, and Influencers can all make up a Social Media Marketing campaign. 

UI stands for User Interface and is a common term in web design and development describing the way a website or app looks and is presented. Similarly, UX stands for User Experience and is often used to describe how the user will navigate a website or app. CX, much like UX, stands for Customer Experience and describes the experience a customer has with your company, its social media, website, product or services.
